Charlie Chaplin - The best comedian

A sweet little man with a bowler hat, mustache and cane from his film The Tramp, Charlie Chaplin is still the most iconic comic characters, and the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of comedy. He a British comedy actor who was considered one of the biggest stars of the silent film era. Chaplin made his acting debut as a pageboy in a production of Sherlock Holmes. Then, in 1914, he introduced the character of The Little Tramp—first glimpsed by audiences in Kid Auto Races at Venice—to differentiate himself from the other actors in Sennett films.

But the reason Charlie Chaplin came to be known as a great comedian was because, when he was able to begin writing films under his own direction, his comedies contained emotion, heart, developed characters and subtlety. Prior to Chaplin, the major source of comedy films in the silent era was Mack Sennett's Keystone lot. The Keystones were comprised, for the most part, of slapstick with lots of gags, lots of overacting and not much plot. Another thing that caused Chaplin to stand apart from other comic actors of his time was that he understood the concept of comedy. Because of his experience in musical hall comedy troupe, Chaplin knew how to dress, act, and walk to get a laugh from the audience.
