“I like to say I tricked Comedy Central into buying an ‘unscripted’ special,” said Dunham, of his 10th and most recent comedy special: Jeff Dunham’s Completely Unrehearsed Last-Minute Pandemic Holiday Special.
“I came up with the idea literally two months ago and we shot it three weeks ago,” said Dunham in a recent interview with The New York Post. “It was a crazy turnaround creatively and technically. I heard of so many other comics doing specials [during COVID] in drive-ins, etc. and I said, ‘We can do this.’”
Despite Dunham’s modesty, pulling off the comedy special on such a short timeline was no small feat. Though it took only months to produce, they were long months of hard work, culminating in a live taping over two shows, both in front of an intimate audience of only 100 spectators. “This is my 10th special, and it’s always an 18-to-24-month ordeal to build them, one joke at a time … getting the breathing the same and perfecting it so it’s a lay-up,” he said, contrasting the current special to those of the past.
